Lake Greenwood was formed by the installation of a hyrdo-electric dam across the mighty Saluda River at a location adjacent to Hwy 34 near Chappells,SC. The lake has over 212 miles of shoreline and covers nearly 12,000 acres. The Reedy River also plays a role in the lake as it enters the Saluda River above the dam.
The lake was created between 1935 and 1940 for the construction of Buzzard's Roost Dam. The Powerhouse was equipped with three turbines each driving a 5 megawatt generator to provide power service to the lakelands area.
Some of the first landings on the lake were, Irvin's Fish Camp, Floyd's Landing, Pittman's Landing, and Skipper's Landing. Lake Greenwood is used for recreational purposes including boating, skiiing, and fishing.The next lake down river is Lake Murray.
